Many asthma medications are on the market, but two classesÛinhaled corticosteroids and bronchodilatorsÛare the most common. ÏInhaled corticosteroids are the key to asthma care. When taken daily, they reduce inflammation and help prevent new attacks. Rapid acting bronchodilator inhalers (rescue inhalers) are used during asthma episodesÛthey open up air passages to reverse the bronchospasm,Ó says Stuart Tousman, PhD, associate professor of psychology, Rockford College, Illinois. Dr. Tousman runs a cognitive-behavioral asthma education program in an outpatient setting and is a board member of the Association of Asthma Educators. He is well-known for his research on the link between an active, healthy lifestyle and improved asthma outcomes.
