Chiropractic care for children is not what usually comes to mind when we think about a chiropractor. However, many times there is injury to the spinal column during birth that goes on undetected until much later in life. This occurrence is called "birth trauma." When the spine is out-of-line, there can be much pain, and children will suffer as a result. It is easy to discredit children when they complain of backaches and such. However, it is time we realize that this discomfort can be very real.
Mothers are becoming more aware of birth trauma and are seeking ways to lower the risk of their children experiencing this. To help lower the risk of a baby being born with birth trauma, a mother to be should give birth to her children in the squatting position. This even though it is still not commonly practiced in the United States is the most natural position to give birth. This is because the force of gravity will help in the delivery of the baby by speeding up the process as well as making the experience more comfortable for the mother as well as the baby. In addition the pressure of the birthing process does not rest on the baby's head and neck.
Chiropractic care for children helps to relief conditions other than pain in backs and legs. Children and babies who receive chiropractic care will experience less colic, headaches, issues with nursing, extreme ear infections, ADD, relief from asthma, and bed-wetting. It should be understood that the successfulness of these treatments to improve these conditions would depend on whether or not the root of the problem stems from spinal subluxation or birth trauma.
It is best for your pediatrician and your chiropractor to work together when it comes to treating your child. Your pediatrician will perform his duties as your child's regular medical doctor. A children's chiropractor will attend to issues of the spinal and which affects the nervous system.
When children are treated by a pediatric chiropractor, many times they do not have to continue sessions for long periods of time. Children respond very quickly to treatment as a general rule and many times they will only need to see the chiropractor a couple of times.
When a child or an infant has an adjustment it is not the same as when an adult has one. These adjustments are very gentle and many times if the baby or child is asleep they will not even be awaken. You can be assured that chiropractics care for your children is perfectly safe.
