DRX9000Ù receives mention in first ever literature review of spinal decompression
Tampa, FL, September 18, 2006: The first ever literature review of spinal decompression was published in the in the September 2006 issue of the peer reviewed journal, Pain Practice. According to the authors, ÏThe objective of this study was to systematically review the literature to assess the efficacy of nonsurgical spinal decompression ÷.Ó From the available literature the authors determined that the number and quality of previously published studies is very low. As a result, they added three unrandomized studies in their review of available literature. In their conclusion, the authors determined that ÏThe evidence for the efficacy of motorized spinal decompression for discogenic lumbosacral back pain remains inconclusiveÓ and that ÏScientifically more rigorous studies ÷Ó are needed. Despite this conclusion, two interesting observations were made. First, conducting a double-blind study on a device such as the DRX9000Ù is problematic because the ÏBlinding of the patients is difficultÓ because even decompression therapy at low weights may provide some relief to the patient. To overcome this problem, the authors suggest Ïblinding the assessorÓ in future studies. Secondly, the authors state that ÏExperimental data exist to support the concept that spinal decompression reduces intradiscal pressure. This in turn may facilitate oxygen and nutrient uptake and improve disc metabolism and restoration.Ó Despite the science supporting spinal decompression, the authors question why more controlled studies are not being performed. The authors suggest that perhaps Ïdevice manufacturers historically have not undertaken such studies.Ó When asked to comment on this remark, Jim Gibson, President and CEO of Axiom Worldwide offered the following statement, ÏI cannot speak for the other companies that claim to manufacture spinal decompression, but Axiom is dedicated to funding and encouraging the studies that the authors call for. Since our inception, a large portion of our annual budget is allocated each year to the continued study of our technology and how our technology affects patients. Depending on the study protocol, the research can take years to complete. Prior to publishing any outcomes, the data must be analyzed, formatted, and then submitted for peer-review. Unfortunately, this process takes considerable time and expense before the end result is published.Ó
