PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― Millions of us are overwhelmed by stress. Ezzie Klein is one of them. One of her two children is autistic and requires constant attention. And her daughter has a busy sports and school schedule. She didn't want to take drugs and meditation didn't work. She finally found a solution. It's called the StressEraser, a portable bio-feedback device.
"It will monitor your nervous system based upon your pulse," said Dr. Neil Yellen, a chiropractor and owner of Phoenix Laser Therapy & Chiropractic Center. He says it helped control his stress so well he now recommends it to his patients.
"We can't always eliminate the problems in our life but we can change how we deal with them," said Dr. Yellen.
The stress eraser monitors pulse and calculates nervous system activity, which directly affects breathing, that's displayed with wave lengths. Choppy peaks and valleys mean you're not relaxed.
"We're going to use our breathing to control our nervous system, rather than allow our nervous system to control our breathing," said Dr. Yellen.
As you slow down your breathing the nervous system calms down, you see fewer, smoother peaks and valleys. The goal is to get three boxes.
"That tells you how well you're doing one box would be you're stressed, two boxes you're starting to relax, three boxes are you're doing pretty well," said Dr. Yellen.
"It's small, it's easy, and it teaches me how to slow down," said Ezzie. She's been using the StressEraser for the recommended 15 minutes a day, for a few months and says she's more relaxed, sleeping better, and relieved.
"I'm just happy I found something that helps me slow down and reduce the stress," said Ezzie.
Whether it's with the StressEraser that costs 300 dollars or exercise, doctors say it's important to find some way to control stress. Otherwise it can cause everything from heart disease to insomnia, to back aches.
