ÎFoerderpreis fuer SchmerzforschungÌ from German Society for the Study of Pain
The prize is called ÎFoerderpreis fuer SchmerzforschungÌ from German Society for the Study of Pain (German Chapter of International Association for the Study of PainÛIASP). Annually the prize is awarded to the scientists who published a substantial research results concerning investigation of pain mechanisms, diagnostics or therapy of pain in peer-reviewed journals last year. The quality of papers of the applicants for prize is evaluated by the scientific jury (members of scientific committee of German Society for Study of Pain).

Our paper ÎUsichenko TI, Dinse M, Hermsen M, Witstruck T, Pavlovic D, Lehmann C. Auricular acupuncture for pain relief after total hip arthroplastyÛa randomized controlled study. Pain 2005;114:320Ò7Ì won the Second Prize under the category ÎClinical researchÌ. It was the first time in the history of the prizes that it was awarded for CAM method in pain therapy.

In this paper, in a randomized patientÒevaluator blinded study we compared the pain relief effect of auricular acupuncture (AA) applied specific AA points versus sham acupuncture in patients after total hip arthroplasty. The amount of intravenous piritramide (opioid analgesic comparable with morphine) applied via patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) pump to treat post-operative pain was used to assess the effect of AA during 36 h after surgery. Piritramide requirement after surgery in AA group (n = 28) was lower than in control (n = 26): mean 37 versus 54 mg; P = 0.004, whereas pain intensity was similar in both groups.
