MANIPULATION UNDER ANESTHESIA (MUA)
MANIPULATION UNDER ANESTHESIA (MUA)
The term Manipulation Under Anesthesia might sound like a fairly daunting prospect, but it is a very common, and effective, procedure. It is just a more thorough form of chiropractic treatment—though the name implies that it might be a kind of invasive surgery. In reality, it is a chiropractic adjustment for a wide variety of ailments—back injuries, shoulder injuries, neck injuries, and more. It has been shown to have more positive long-term effects.
Often, Manipulation under Anesthesia (MUA) is performed for chronic pain and injuries. It is important to discuss with a doctor the potential risks and rewards for the procedure. By and large, MUA has a high success rate, but it may not be useful for all types of injuries. Normally, Manipulation Under Anesthesia is performed when a patient hasn’t adequately responded to another form of treatment.
MUA has been used since the early part of the 20th century. The procedure uses anesthesia to manipulate specific parts of the body that might be too uncomfortable otherwise. Though anesthesia is used, the procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis. There is no need for an overnight stay—a clear signal of the procedure’s safety and effectiveness.
The way that MUA has changed is due to advances in anesthesiology. Conscious sedation will be used for manipulation of the spine, shoulders, and hips.
It is important to note that not all chiropractors are certified to perform MUA. MUA requires an anesthesiologist in addition to a MUA chiropractor, so it is important to find a doctor accustomed to performing this type of manipulation. Contact Pines Total Health Center to meet with a doctor and determine if MUA is necessary or you can get by with another form of treatment.
Generally, people who receive Manipulation Under Anesthesia have been getting chiropractic adjustments for years, as a result of a chronic problem. Getting MUA has been proven to effectively curb the symptoms of chronic pain. In addition, patients who have been recently injured, due to a car accident or other issue, may also benefit from MUA.
