INTRODUCTION
it is easy to think about athletes as a homogeneous group of individuals, nutrition knowledge, awareness, expectations and interest of an athlete are often dictated by the sport that the athlete plays. Despite spending considerable time and effort in developing their physical condition and honing their skills to enhance exercise performance, some groups of athletes have little awareness about the importance nutrition may play in assisting them to optimise their exercise performance. The opposite is true of other athletes, where nutritional intervention and prescription is an excepted part of the sociology for their sport. In order to successfully work with athletes it is imperative to offer dietary advice and develop nutritional strategies that meet the expectations of the athlete. In a previous continuing education quiz, a range of questions and answers were provided on sports nutrition topics regularly addressed by sports dietitians when advising their athletes.1 Examples of the application of sports nutrition knowledge can assist in assimilating this information into a practical picture. In this and an upcoming issue, two case studies are presented to demonstrate practical application of today's sports nutrition knowledge. The first of these is presented here.
